What They Don’t Want You To Know About Corn

0

There’s nothing like a great piece of corn on the cob at your summer barbeque or your buttered popcorn to go along with your favorite movie, right? Or wrong?

This question looks like it’s springing up a lot more often…

Are corn and food products made out of corn permitted on the diet solution?

Well, the correct answer is yes, BUT there are a few details you should consider initially (you didn’t think I was just going to leave it at that, did you?)

It’s been estimated that about 60% of the corn, now inside the U.S., is genetically altered (though, I do believe that this number is larger now). The technique of genetically modifying corn started off to try to make corn plants resistant to certain pesticides. This can help the grower because they are then able to raise a larger crop since it is simpler to control pests (they are able to spray the crops with pesticides and get rid of insects while not damaging their plants).

Sweet corn has also been genetically altered (now called Bt-corn) so that it produces a poison that kills dangerous bugs. What this means is the farmer does not need to fight bugs by using pesticides.

Now although some of these may sound like a positive thing (especially if you’re a farmer!), we need to consider how GMO foods respond in our systems as well as what type of lasting effects they might have on our health and wellbeing.

Well, considering that the introduction of GMO food items still is relatively recent, we’re in ways being utilized as “guinea pigs” in a massive experiment (Yikes!). In April 2007, Arpad Pusztai, from the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, UK, released that experiments had proven intestinal modifications in rats brought on by feeding on genetically engineered potatoes (and I don’t know about you, but I’m not happy about anybody attempting to mess with my intestinal tract).

This actually doesn’t surprise me. It’s incredible to me just how many more people today complain of things such as irritable bowel syndrome and other uncomfortable digestive troubles. I’m not saying that eating GMO foods is the only cause of these types of ailments but I’m confident it’s a substantial contributor (along with processed foods, but that’s a story for a another day).

Ok, so what if you’re able to find non-GMO corn? (Which usually it is difficult to know which brand names and goods are GMO and which are not) where does corn fit into your DSP meal plan?

First, your system reads corn as being a grain, NOT a vegetable thus if you are to include it into your diet, this will be the grain (carbohydrate) for your meal. So having corn and brown rice would be having 2 grains in a single meal. This is not automatically off limits and not “bad” in any way, just consider if you are somebody who is very sensitive to grains, you may shed weight more rapidly simply by greatly decreasing the volume of grains you eat everyday. You might need to take 2 – 3 weeks and adhere to the “no grain” diet plans inside the Diet Solution manual and see if it helps to break through any weight loss plateaus and/or assists your digestive system.

What about microwave oven popcorn?

Well even the organic and natural types include additives (of course to help keep them while in the bag) and have been demonstrated to contain the same chemical coating inside the bag that is utilized on non-stick pots and pans (double YIKES!). I’d stay away from these things.

How about air popped popcorn?

This is the best choice and may absolutely be used as an occasional treat. But notice I said “occasional”. Don’t forget a lot of people lose weight a lot quicker by lowering (not necessarily eliminating) many grains. Munching on popcorn day after day might and most probably will, hinder your weight reduction attempts.

I hope this information helps you to make a more educated choice at your next barbeque and at your next movie night. Don’t forget, corn is not off limits in anyway, just don’t forget you’re looking for the non-GMO types and including it as a grain and not a vegetable into your meals.
