As a hunter, I pursued bucks of average size for a long time, but after a while, this became unfulfilling and I exclusively hunted for bucks that could be considered trophies. The most efficient method of determining if there are big bucks in an area which you are planning on deer hunting is to make inquiries. As a hunter, you should speak to the locals to try to find out if there are large bucks around : owners of feed stores, game wardens, county agents, ranchers, farmers, other hunters, and even people in local diners or coffee shops. Ask them about the locations of big deer sightings, and where they have been sighted in the past. Just ask about the sightings of extremely large bucks instead of overall population count. You won’t get anywhere finding a large population of average sized deer. You’re after a trophy rack. You have some freedom if you haven’t already leased an area, but if you have, learn what areas are best for stands, and where the biggest bucks have been harvested in that area, finding the locations where the largest bucks are seen most often throughout the years. This is a good place to begin. A word of warning, however, and that is that deer stories approach fishing tales in their reliability, so you should get as many verifiable facts as you are able.
